What if the internet was gone?

Spencer Kelly from the BBC’s programme Click, reports (June 15, 2007)on the “Warnings of ‘Internet Overload’“.

His concerns stem from the YouTube generation and the need for instant access to streaming video. Spencer reports that the data that YouTube emits each day is equal to 75 million emails. Years ago when only text was flying around the net did you care if an email came in 11 seconds too slow. Now think of trying to view the latest video clip floating around the internet and the frustration if it doesn’t come in seamlessly. I myself got frustrated today trying to show my mother a clip that on my desktop was perfect and on the wireless laptop was choppy as it was loading in.

It’s interesting to wonder what, if anything, this demand for instant “data” gratification will cause or place strain on our current web infrastructure.

I’ve never even considered the infrastructure or wondered what it was. I turn on my computer and there’s the internet. What if one morning I woke up and it was gone? I can’t even think about it.
